THEMATIC INVESTMENT FUNDS
The accelerating structural shifts in many economies has prompted investors to look at global megatrends as a way to allocate capital in the hope to capture the changes in the drivers of corporate earnings.
Global megatrends encompasses forces such as; demographic profile changes in major economies, resource scarcity and climate change, rapid urbanisation, changing consumer behaviour especially in high-growth emerging economies. At the same time, technology is redefining business models in a host of industries and unleashing widespread disruption. A new set of investment themes arise that asset managers want to exploit.
Over the recent years, investors have directed large amount of money into those thematic funds, prompting many asset managers active and passive to expand their offering in that area.
While the implications of these megatrends could be significant, opening new growth opportunities and catapulting early adopters to global leaderships, investors should remain very critical of the themes currently available. Before investing in a thematic we recommend to assess at least ;
the duration of that thematic, its realistic earnings growth potential and sustainability for the company you are going to be invested.
Most importantly, you must be well aware of the specific industry concentration risks you may be exposed to.
The selection of active managers in thematic investing is a challenging exercise. If your goal is to spot the “best in class” funds, usually you need at least the following basic ingredients ; a peer group (the larger, the better), and a track record (the longer, the better).
It is exactly what is missing most of the time to analyse thematic funds currently. Many have been launched over the past two to three years, mostly by managers without any track record managing the exact same strategy.
At WSP, we compensate this lack of useful data by focusing more on qualitative analysis. We assess carefully the managers investment processes, the resources, the skillset, as well as the individuals track record. We also spend time to analyse the specific style risks the fund’s investment policy may create, and we compare it with active or passive funds with the most similar thematics.
In the Thematic funds list, we have included the following type of thematics. To notice, that sustainable investing theme funds are also part of that list.
- Global megatrends funds, comprise the growing choice of thematic funds we have identified with the best potential to exploit megatrends investors are interested by.
- Responsible Impact funds, focus on broad sustainability themes as well as on delivering social or environmental impact alongside financial returns. This is a rapidly growing group.
- Sustainable sector funds, which focus on investment opportunities that contribute to, and aim to benefit from, the transition to a green economy in areas like renewables, energy efficiency, environmental services, water, and green real estate.
