WSP Model Portfolios are built from our universe of selected active Ucits funds. We manage actively the allocation according to current and expected market conditions and taking into consideration the fund managers’ exposure.

The aim is to demonstrate that an optimal combination of strategies, coupled with a careful selection of active fund managers, have the ability to deliver added-value to investors over the long run, while keeping a full exposure and constant asset allocation within the given investment profiles.

More detailed reporting including portfolio quantitative and qualitative data are available to customers having subscribed to the WS Partners Model Portfolio Services. Would you request more information on this service, please contact us.

Portfolios Structure

  • Portfolios are made of 14 to 17  Ucits or Alternative Ucits funds (according to profile).
  • Two currency based portfolios ; in US dollar or in Euro.
  • Apart one fund with a bi-monthly liquidity, all funds have a daily liquidity.
  • Usually we select identical funds either for US dollar or Euro based portfolios, but keeping currency exposure hedge for fixed income funds.
  • The performances are shown net of fees, calculated from the cheapest share classes, hence making our Model Portfolios fully replicable.

Strategic Allocations

We keep a constant balance between equity and fixed income strategies according to Model Portfolio profiles and guidelines. We also maintain a neutral currency and regional allocation compare to benchmarks.

The portfolio outperformance should mainly arise from the alpha generated by active management, and to a certain extent to a diversification optimisation. Tactical bets such as investment style (value, growth defensive), sector allocation (e.g., commodities, real estate), interest rate or spread duration may also contribute, time to time, to the value added generation.

A conservative portfolio with a 1/3 equity and 2/3 fixed income allocation.

Within the equity universe we tend to favour yielding strategies rather than pure price appreciation funds.

The objective is to outperform over time a benchmark composed by 1/3 of the MSCI All Country World Index, and by 2/3 of the Barclays Global Aggregate Bond Index.

The portfolio aims to outperform a benchmark made of 50% MSCI All Country World Index, and 50% Barclays Global Aggregate Bond Index in a risk-adjusted return basis and with a capital preservation mindset.

For that reason, we maintain around 33% of the portfolio allocation into Absolute Return strategies, including Alternative Ucits funds.

The most equity oriented portfolio with the aim to beat a benchmark composed by 2/3 of the MSCI All Country World Index and 1/3 of the Barclays Global Aggregate Bond Index. Growth of capital through capital appreciation is the main long term portfolio objective.

Market Review and Outlook

Market Review – November 2020

The announcement of three vaccines that are effective against the virus drove a risk-on mood in markets and added fuel to the post-US election rally, eclipsing worries about the near-term economic outlook. Equity markets cheered the light at the end of the tunnel, with this year’s biggest losers gaining the most in November: MSCI Europe ex-UK and FTSE All-Share indices returned 14.2% and 12.7%, respectively. The year-to-date star performers, Asia ex-Japan and the US, still made impressive monthly gains of 8.0% and 11.0%. Global value stocks returned 15.1%, outperforming growth, which returned 10.9%. And in fixed income it was the riskier high yield and emerging markets that outshone the higher quality markets.

The economic recovery in the US has been proceeding at a good pace, but there are some signs that it is slowing. The PMI surveys for November showed that both manufacturing and services activity was improving, with the indices both rising more than expected. Labour market data for October also continued to improve, with the unemployment rate falling 1 percentage point to 6.9%. But the consumer is feeling more wary of late, with the Conference Board and University of Michigan’s confidence measures for November declining.

In the eurozone it now seems apparent that the economy will print a contraction in the fourth quarter. On the politics front, the leaders of Poland and Hungary effectively vetoed the European Union’s recovery fund and seven-year budget because the funding is conditional on upholding the rule of law. Negotiations are ongoing, but the intervention raises the risk of delaying members’ access to funds. Eurozone consumer confidence also took a knock in November, declining to -17.6 from-15.5.

Outlook

Following the removal of one of our macro strategies from our selection list, we will make a switch in our absolute return pocket on a one-to-on basis. On the equity side we are going to slightly rebalance our growth-style bias into a more neutral stance. Growth style will remain however overweight.

Performance Review – November 2020

The MSCI ACWI (USD) was up +12.4% during the month while the Barclays Global Aggregate index (USD hedged) was up +0.6%.

Active management had a positive contribution. Over the 27 funds we have in the portfolios, 17 were outperforming their respective benchmark. Alpha generation came mainly from the fixed income funds.

In absolute terms, the Growth portfolio (+8.5%) outperformed the Balanced portfolio (+6.3%) and the Yield & Income portfolio (+6.0%).

Yield & Income Portfolio (USD)

The portfolio outperformed its benchmark by +146bps in November. The portfolio was strongly boosted by the compression of the risk premium of all risky fixed income strategies. Our overweight exposure in EM debt and to a lesser extend in High Yield and Loans were the main contributors. On the other hand, the underweight in value-style strategies was a slight headwind. Contribution of active was also very strong (+85bps).

Balanced Portfolio (USD)

The portfolio underperformed its benchmark (+6.3% vs +6.4%). Absolute return did well during the month, in particular the merger arbitrage fund (+7.5%) and a long/short equity (+12.3%) but there were unable to fully compensate our structural underweight in equities. Active management was also a strong contributor (+79bps).

Growth Portfolio (USD)

The Growth portfolio was outperforming its benchmark by +10bps in November. Active management (+62bps) and our fixed income positioning more than compensated our detrimental growth-style bias in equities.
